YTD amounts are with this employer before this check. Different work and residence states are not supported; we will flag them rather than estimate cross-state taxes.

Federal W-4 & payroll deductions

2020-or-later W-4 only. Benefits must already qualify under your employer plan; this tool does not determine contribution eligibility or annual limits.

Not Roth. Reduces income-tax wages but not FICA.

Qualified accident/health insurance premium only; not FSA, dependent care, life insurance or HSA.

Massachusetts state form — review defaults

Use your state withholding certificate, not the federal W-4 allowance count. Values start at zero; review them before calculating.

Confirm local/other charges below, including a confirmed zero, to finish the net estimate. Special exemptions and alternative state certificate elections not shown here require payroll review.

Local payroll charges — not confirmed

Check your paystub for local or other employee payroll charges not already entered as benefits or after-tax deductions.

Ask your employer: “Are any local or other payroll charges missing from this breakdown, and how much applies to this paycheck?” If you do not know, leave the confirmation unchecked. Where local confirmation is required, the result stays partial.

Enter a confirmed dollar amount, including 0 if payroll confirms none. Changing this amount clears confirmation.

Use each deduction once. Do not repeat amounts entered under benefits or after-tax deductions.

Estimates only. Annual salary assumes equal regular paychecks. Variable pay, tips, multiple employers and nonresident-alien rules require separate review.

Calculated in your browser. No salary entries saved or transmitted by this tool.

How Massachusetts withholding is handled

Massachusetts payroll uses M-4 allowances, a year-to-date cap on the FICA deduction, and a high-income withholding rate. Employee Paid Leave uses a separate wage base.

A state withholding example

Monthly taxable wages of $5,000, one exemption and $382.50 qualifying FICA give $212.53 state withholding if none of the $2,000 annual deduction has been used. Once exhausted, the same calculation gives $231.65.

Coverage limits

Enter the deduction already used this year, not annual FICA wages. Confirm PFML covered wages, employer retirement contributions, employee share and the annual cap.

Regular resident W-2 wages only. Use confirmed local/other payroll charges where required. No tax-return, reciprocity, nonresident-alien or special-occupation calculations. Benefit entries must qualify under your employer’s plan.
